Jillian in January Challenge Week 2, Plus Bonus Weight-Related Meltdown

It’s the second week of the Jillian in January Challenge, so I figured I’d do a quick check-in on my progress so far. I’ve done both the 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30 series before, and I decided to mix it up for this challenge by going back and forth between the two DVDs. I also tend to get bored doing the same type of activity day after day, so I figured I’d do a couple Jillian workouts and a couple runs each week and call it good.

Last week I did three Jillian workouts, a run, and a long walk, so I was off to a decent start. But then I decided to take my measurements on Saturday and it totally unleashed a fury of inner crazy. I’ve been measured before by tailors, but I’ve never bothered to look up my measurements against U.S. size charts. I was curious, so I did some Googling and had to fight the urge to do some serious ugly crying.


Just realized his hips are a size “large” according to U.S. size charts.

Some background: Since losing weight a few years ago, I’ve definitely struggled with seeing myself at my new size. When I look in the mirror, or even at certain photos, I still see my old, heavier self. Which is maybe why taking my measurements freaked me out — I have spent years trying to convince my brain YOU ARE A SIZE 6 NOW, and it turns out that according to the standard size charts I looked at, my upper half is indeed a size 6, but my hips are a 12 and my thighs are size 8. And newly armed with that information, my brain was all SEE I TOLD YOU YOU’RE BIGGER THAN YOU SAY YOU ARE.

So long story short, I acted like a total douche for a few hours before realizing that the rational part of my brain felt fine about my size before knowing my measurements, so I should chill the hell out and also eat that Milky Way Midnight I found in the pantry before Dave got to it. Also, those size charts must be full of shit on account of if I really do span three whole sizes from my waist to my knees, HOW WOULD CLOTHES EVEN FIT ME?

    Don’t be too hard on yourself! Focus on how you feel and I think that’s the best measure. Sizes are wack! Absolutely nuts. It can’t be a true measure, as it varies from store to store. Some do vanity sizing, and stretchy materials throw off the sizes too. Ugh. Almost enough to make you join a nudist colony. Almost. Also, how do nudists survive this polar vortex? Moving on… I lurve me some Buster. You should look up Drunk History – Lewis and Clark on YouTube and you’ll love your life.

      I had no idea you had lost that much – you look incredible. Sometimes I wonder if the attention people give others when they lose weight is part of the problem. Like, it’s one thing to encourage somebody or tell them they look great, but even with the small amount I lost I’ve had people make me feel like I was basically a hideous gargoyle before I lost weight. I think it can create a lot of pressure to look “perfect,” which is bullshit because nobody does.

        Yeah, basically I have the world on notice to never ever compliment me in that way. I’m like, actually I loved myself then, too, so let’s just celebrate being pretty in all shapes.

        I think part of my problem now is that I’ve seen what I can change and so I’m annoyed that there are things I seem unable to. Like, why aren’t I a wizard?

        And I definitely struggle with seeing my body as average/normal and the numbers definitely don’t paint me as average (I’m a monster like you), so when people say “NO I SWEAR YOU LOOK NORMAL” I’m like YOU’RE LYING YOU JUST MEAN I’M NOT OBESE.

      Aw, thank you. And thanks for hosting the challenge! It’s so much easier to curse my way through side lunges/Jillian’s lack of supportive workout bras knowing other people are doing it too!

    I used to sew a lot. It’s something I want to get back into for 2014. That and more blogging and as you can see I haven’t had time to write an actual post yet in January. Anyways I digress….what I was getting at is that size charts are really messed up. I never rely on them when I buy stuff online or it would never fit.

    I usually wear a size 4 but when I sew myself stuff it’s more like a size 12. Pattern sizes never changed over time the way they did on RTW clothes. So, please do not listen to the size charts. They are so off the mark it is ridiculous! Keep up the good work with your workouts, you really put a lot into it from what you post here!
